Autodesk University 2009 Reaches More Than 25,000 Customers Worldwide

More than 25,000 people from 100 countries participated in Autodesk University (AU) from 1 – 3 Dec, attending in Las Vegas and virtually via AU Virtual, making this year’s AU the most far reaching in the event’s 17-year history.

Feedback from AU attendees indicates that staying competitive is one of the major reasons people come to the three-day user conference in Las Vegas. Read more.

AEC Guide to Sustainable Design - New and Renovated!

AEC guide to Sustainable Design

More than half of the buildings that will be standing in the year 2030 are already built, and the urgency to improve the efficiency of existing buildings as a means to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions is growing. To help our customers take advantage of the enormous opportunities in renovation and retrofit, we “retrofitted” the Guide to Sustainable Design.

Updated site now features expanded content with best practices for improving performance of existing buildings and a new interactive user interface. The newly renovated Guide is designed to let building industry stakeholders select their profession and then virtually “walk through” all phases of a design or renovation/retrofit project - viewing relevant key decision points at each stage of the building lifecycle that affect energy efficiency, water efficiency and carbon emissions.

Autodesk’s BIM-enabled sustainable design solutions are highlighted for every phase of new or renovation projects, and new sections now feature an overview of Governance, Customer Stories, and Resources such as demonstrations, videos, white papers, and articles.

The Autodesk Guide to Sustainable Design illustrates sustainable design principles and technologies for more energy-efficient buildings and environmentally conscious infrastructure projects. Users learn how decisions made early in the process can significantly improve the efficient use of energy, water, materials and land in a final project design. Check it out!

Tip 1: An AutoCAD Hip Tip on the Application Menu

In the upper left hand corner of AutoCAD 2009 and 2010 you'll find a nice big red "A". This is where the Application Menu can be found.

This Application Menu is very similar to those found in the Microsoft Office 2007 products such as MS Word. Autodesk is trying to provide a consistent interface - which ultimately will make your life easier as you move around from product to product. Within the Application menu you'll find easy access to your recently viewed files (including sheet sets!). Learn more.

Tip 2: Autodesk Revit Architecture: Troubleshooting Startup Delays

We occasionally have to share data with groups that use Microstation, so we need to convert our Civil 3D drawings to .dgn format- including both AutoCAD linework and Civil 3D objects, such as points, alignments, profiles, etc.

There are a few ways to convert a Civil 3D DWG to a DGN. Find out how.

Tip 3: AutoCAD Architecture: Scheduling by "Mark"

The out-of-the-box Door and Window Schedules and Schedule Tags are set up to identify each Door or Window with a unique identifier and list each one in the Schedule Table. While that suits many practices (including mine, for Doors), there are many who prefer to assign a "mark" to a particular Door or Window configuration and use that mark on all instances of that configuration. The Schedule Table would then list each mark only once. This is easily done in Autodesk AutoCAD Architecture, with the addition of a few properties and some tweaks to the Schedule Table and Schedule Tag you are using. Learn more.

Autodesk BIM Experience Award Winner: South China University of Technology

As one of China’s pre-eminent technology universities, South China University of Technology (SCUT) has taken a leadership role in the use of building information modelling (BIM) to instruct students in building design. In 2005, the university’s School of Architecture established a laboratory to provide BIM education and training to students.

Autodesk BIM Experience Award Winner: South China University of Technology

SCUT faculty members also use the laboratory for their research and publications relating to BIM theory and practices. SCUT students use Autodesk Revit Architecture, Autodesk Revit Structure , Autodesk® 3ds Max® Design, and Autodesk® Ecotect® Analysis software during their architectural training - helping them conceptualise, document, and analyse their architectural designs. LAUD Architects Capitalises on the Full Potential of Building Information Modelling with Autodesk Revit Architecture

Thanks to Autodesk Revit Architecture – a smaller team of architects and technical staff were empowered to generate many versions of coordinated plans, sections, elevations and 3D renderings, which would easily have taken twice the time and staff count.

Director, LAUD Architects

LAUD Architects Capitalises on the Full Potential of Building Information Modelling with Autodesk Revit Architecture

With a philosophy that emphasises the appropriate and creative use of technologies, materials, space and forms, LAUD Architects Pte Ltd, saw the opportunity to adopt Building Information modelling (BIM) using Autodesk Revit Architecture to improve design innovation. In addition, the economic downturn and increased pressures on overheads further served as a compelling reason to invest in staff training to enable the firm’s lean team to design in a more resource and time efficient manner. The Revival Centre Church in Singapore was the first project that LAUD Architects designed fully in 3D using Autodesk Revit Architecture. Read more.
